Fuel Up to Play 60!, 31 Mar 2011 03:34:45 +0000voates]]>I think that’s a great slogan. FUTP60 was launched by the NFL and National Dairy Council, in collaboration with the USDA. The program encourages kids to consume nutrient-rich foods (low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and achieve at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.  As a member of the American Dietetic Association, I am volunteering with our Kid’s Eat Right initiative to help 2 middle schools get the students to fuel up by eating right and help them play at least 60 minutes. Sounds like something we all need to do regardless of our age. Check out FUTP and Kids Eat Right and join the cause.

You now know there is a day for everything? Well, today, March 9, 2011, is the day the American Dietetic Association honored me and other Registered Dietitians.  As a nutritionist/RD, I feel like a prophet crying out in the wilderness, “Repent, and turn from your weight gaining eating habits.”  I live in Tennessee, one of the fattest states in the US, where the state Medicaid funding pays for surgery but not dietary counseling.  Prevention is always better than surgical treatment.  Wouldn’t you rather prevent having heart disease than receive treatment for it?  Don’t tell me it’s better to develop diabetes type 2 than to prevent it.  ”Tis better to have loved than to not have loved at all,” is a bunch of crap.

So it is on this historic day, Registered Dietitian Day, I decided to start my blog – GOT Nutrition. And I want to give it to you.
